Good governance is not always the most visible part of hospice care, but it is one of the most important.

At Hospice Care Kenya, we believe strong governance helps build sustainable, accountable and effective hospices that can continue delivering compassionate palliative care for years to come. It also gives our supporters in the UK confidence that funds entrusted to us are being managed responsibly and transparently in Kenya.

Between November 2025 and January 2026, we partnered with Kenya Hospices and Palliative Care Association (KEHPCA) to deliver governance training workshops for four of our long-term hospice partners.

The training focused on:
• board roles and accountability
• financial oversight and risk management
• effective decision-making
• conflict of interest and policy development
• organisational sustainability and funding diversification

The outcomes since training have been encouraging. Across the four hospices, boards have strengthened their understanding of governance responsibilities, improved financial oversight and risk monitoring and introduced more structured approaches to meetings, decision-making and accountability.

Hospices have also begun reviewing and strengthening key organisational policies, improving documentation and record keeping, developing governance structures and planning more strategically for long-term sustainability and diversified funding.

Strong governance helps create resilient institutions that can adapt, grow and continue serving patients and families well into the future. We are grateful to KEHPCA and all four hospices for their commitment to this important work.
