Mr Omari, a retired police officer, led a healthy, active life before his diagnosis of advanced prostate cancer that had spread to his bones. In his search for a diagnosis his disease had advanced beyond treatment and his finances had depleted, causing deep distress to him and his family. Through support from Hospice Care Kenya, Mr Omari receives regular hospice visits, counselling, and access to essential medications at no cost. Morphine, in particular, became life-changing, managing his severe pain effectively and allowing him to regain independence in daily tasks like cooking and attending church. He found solace in a compassionate hospice team, and he began to participate actively in a support group, encouraging others on their journey.

With pain under control, he was able to embrace life again, describing morphine as his “magic drug” for restoring comfort and dignity.

The impact of effective pain relief through morphine, combined with emotional and social support, has given Mr Omari a renewed sense of purpose. He no longer fears death and instead says his cancer is ‘a monster, like Goliath’ that he is ready to face. His journey now inspires others, proving that palliative care and effective pain management can bring hope and strength, even in the most challenging times.
