Gwen
Gwen ('Bar') Cottrell 1952 - 2011. Hospice Care Kenya deeply regrets that Gwen Cottrell, also known to many in Kenya and the UK as 'Bar' Bennett, died on Thursday 20th October after being ill for some time with acute myeloid leukaemia. Her funeral and a celebration of her life were held in Lincoln, England on 2nd November.
Gwen, an architect, was born in Kenya and was involved with Nairobi Hospice from its very start in 1988. She designed the hospice building and later became a founding trustee of its UK operation, the Nairobi Hospice Charitable Trust, now Hospice Care Kenya. Gwen was later HCK's first Executive Director and then served again as a trustee for almost a decade, until last year when her illness began to make this impossible.
Fellow trustee Dr Mike Hughes read a tribute at the memorial service to Gwen's work for HCK, where her work and enthusiasm for the hospices in Kenya will be greatly missed by us all.
Gwen is survived by her children and her husband Derek.
